We've been living in our house for seven years now......and the more I walk around looking at things, the more I want to change. Right now, we're putting up crown molding in the kitchen. We actually bought the molding before we moved in, but never installed it. After all these years, we've decided it's about time we did. I'll post some pictures once we're done.

DH has also decided that we might as well install chair rail and crown molding in the dining room. I'm eager to see how this will look...I've always wanted chair rail in my dining room.

Besides all that...I've also beeen searching for new paint colors for the guest bathroom. I've researched a variety of brands....Valspar, Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore, etc. I love Benjamin Moore’s historical paint collection. Any opinions on Benjamin Moore's paint??? (quality, coverage, price, etc). My husband wants me to stay away from Valspar because of a painting disaster he had; although, I am loving some of the colors offered by Valspar.

I want to take my time finding just the right color. Unfortunately, I think I rushed into too many decisions 7 yrs ago....and now I regret it.

I decided to stitch my great grandmother's name ....Margaret Proctor, born in 1882 in Stalybridge, England.

There are so many great decorating tips and ideas out there in blog world. I especially love the decorating style of Linda (theprimitivestitcher). If you haven't checked out her new house, you really should. She has a wonderful eye when it comes to colonial decorating.

Linda had a great idea of changing (or painting) the hinges on her doors to match the knobs.....don't know why I never thought that ??? (Its funny the things that you miss in your house). We always had dark knobs on our doors, so I had my husband change out the hinges on the doors to match. It looks so much better now. (Thanks Linda for the idea!!).

What's for dinner ?

You know how everyone has that “favorite” store they just love to visit and shop at? Well, believe it or not, the store I LOVE doesn’t have any primitive/early American decor in it at all. My secret obsession is Williams-Sonoma. I especially love their recipes. If I throw a dinner party...the first thing I do is check out their website for a great recipe.....and I’ll have to say, I haven’t made a bad dish yet. In a pinch, I will cheat and use their sauces or glazes, such as theses:

We had the the beef bourguignonne last christmas and it was such a hit!!

This weekend we're expecting friends over, so we'll be having slow cooker lasagna. Its such a quick and easy dish....here's the recipe for anyone interested.

PS. I LOVE my slow cooker....I'm convinced the "slow cooker" was invented by a mother of a three year old. I'm thrilled with the idea of throwing everything into one pot and then walking away from it for hours. :)

freaked out by that christmas countdown widget (over to the right) on my blog. I thought it would be cute to put on my blog....but now everytime I see it, I panic. LOL....Especially considering I haven't started any of my shopping !!!

Oh and BTW, another thing that freaks this mommy out is when your 3 year old cuts her hair !!!!! This is what I found yesterday on the floor... I tried to take her picture this morning to show you the mess....but I gave up racing around after her.

Perfect, just in time for holiday pictures. {sigh}

I Need to Know.....

How many of you die-hard primitive or Early American lovers have carpeting in your house? Is it just me, or is anyone else out there totally turned off by carpeting?

As soon as I receive a new primitive decorating magazine or book in the mail my heart skips a beat. I get so excited, I can hardly wait to sit down and pour over the pages. However, the moment I see carpeting in a room....my heart sinks. Anyone else feel that way?

Now, don’t get me wrong, I actually have carpeting in one room in my house (I lost that battle with my husband when we were building the house); and I know that carpeting serves a purpose, but I still hate it. Our carpeting is in a room we use for a spare bedroom. I often close the door into that room.....trying to hide the fact that there is wall-to-wall carpeting. I’ve actually convinced myself that if I close the door the carpeting magically doesn’t exist any more. {Sigh}

Also, while we’re on the topic....has anymore noticed that “primitive” can mean almost anything now days. Maybe it’s become more of a personal interpretation.....then an actual decorating style. But "true primitive" is far from what it use to be. The term seems to be used too loosely. {Sigh}

Maybe I’m thinking too hard.

~The Rockettes~

So.......this year for the first time, we're going to see the Rockettes Christmas Show!!!

Every year, I tell my husband we should see the Rockettes.....but, life takes over and we never do. So this year, I decided no more excuses...we're going. I've ordered the tickets and we are ready. We'll be taking the train into the City. After the show, we plan to see the tree in the Plaza, maybe even ice skate! I definitely want to window shop at Macy's and make a stop at FAO Schwarz.

Can you tell I love Christmas ????

~Through the Eyes of A Child~

This year we're taking our three-year-old on the Polar Express Train. They will be reading the story as the train makes a roundtrip journey to the North Pole. The kids will meet Santa, have hot chocolate and cookies. And, for those who believe, a special gift for each child. The children are even encouraged to wear their pajamas!

She's soooo excited (and I have to admit, so am I). We talk about the Polar Express train every day and especially about meeting Santa.

There's something magical about Christmas...especially through the eyes of a child.

Weekend Warrior

So the snow storm over the weekend kept us inside by the fireplace. Once the storm stopped, we ventured outside to play. We ended up with only 4-6 inches, however, it was very wet snow. We lost power for almost 8 hours Saturday evening.

To pass the time, I stitched Christmas pinkeeps and ornaments from some of my favorite designers. So many of these are such a quick stitch and fun to do. Here are some of my works in progress:

~Glitter Houses~

As far back as I can remember, I've always loved christmas putz houses.

As a child, I remember seeing these wonderful christmas village houses in store windows. Today, putz houses are considered collectibles and are often in high demand. Some of the prices I've seen on e-bay have been outrageous!!

Anyways, I sat down last week and started painting a more primitive version. This is what I came up with so far (it's a work-in-progress, much more painting, etc...):

Hobby Lobby only had one style house, so they're both the same. I hope to go back in a couple of weeks to see if they have any other sizes available. I'll probably tone down the amount of glitter these house normally have, although my daughter has enjoyed dumping the glitter everywhere and on everything. And I mean everywhere.... I actually went to work this week with glitter in my hair and on my face, and of course, I didn't realize it until the day was almost over!! (A little glitter never hurt, a couple of years ago, when my daughter was just a wee one....I went to work with cheerios in my hair) :)

Anywho...I'm getting off subject.

Did a lot of moving around this weekend....and cleaning. Here are some shelf re-dos.

Switched out the table in the dining room...I like this table much better.

Here's the drysink...the picture isn't great...its the best I could do in the morning sunlight. Decided to keep it red...used Caromal Colours...gave it a more textured look.

Weekend Reading

This will be my reading for the weekend.

I'll have to say, Judy Condon certainly out did herself with her newest book, Holidays at a Country Home. This book is loaded with inspiration and decorating ideas (cause remember, I'm decorating challenged). As soon as it came in the mail, I quickly glanced through it and couldn't get over how wonderful it was.

Now, I'm just patiently waiting for Tina's christmas book to come out. :)

BTW, thank you for all the nice comments about my dining room. I guess I should have clarified things by saying that most of my decorating difficulties stem from the fact I have a new house (5 yrs old)....and I find it extremely challenging making a new house look old.

To me, decorating isn't just hanging an antique up on the wall or placing an old table in the room. The house has to have character....uneven floors, original moldings, wainscoting, kitchen fireplace, plastered walls, etc. Oh, what I would do to have a house like that.

Anyways, while we were building....I never considered those things....or I should I say, our budget did not allow us to reproduce a period home. We were fortunate enough to decide to use period moldings throughout the house...and I've tried to use period paint colors, but that is the extent of what we could afford. Anyways, I dream of living in a period home, so for now, I keep dreaming. :)

It's never been my strong suit. I'm one of those people who has to pour over magazines and primitive home books for inspiration. I'm so happy for blogland....without it...I fear my house would be a decorating disaster. However, achieving that perfect look is often held back by my budget.

What didn't break my budget were these chairs. Over the weekend, my dining room chairs arrived. At first glance, you think they are black.....the lighting in my dining room is not too bright. However, depending on the time of day, you can see some undertones of brown in them.

The table in the picture is temporary. I plan on using my tavern table which is the William & Mary leg style. All I have to do is re-finish the table top on the tavern table, so it blends better with the chair finish.

So, I ask.....should I do something different in this room ? And honestly, how do these chairs look.....????

I've been home for the past two days, taking care of my three-year-old who has croup. Night time has been especially tough...but she's now on some meds and seems to be making some improvement today.
While she has been napping, I've been busy making some clove balls for myself. Nothing screams Fall more to me than cloves. Love the smell of them.
I even made a pear....my first. The stem is real...from an actual pear, however, I made the pear. I'm pretty happy with it...not bad for my first one.

BTW, I ended up keeping the drysink red...I just used my caromal colour paints on it. I've been living with it for a few days now and I'm not sure how I feel about the color (thats why I haven't posted pictures yet). Still deciding if I want to keep it red or give it a coat of black now. I'll live with it a few more weeks and then decide.

~Weathering the Storm~

Here in the Hudson Valley, we were hit extremely hard from the storm. The surrounding areas continue to battle the destructive effects of the hurricane. The devastation just 25 miles south of us is unbelievable. We were without power for 3 days...which I realize is nothing compared to the thousands of people with water-logged homes. It's times like this, you can’t take the little things for granted. We are expecting more rain at the end of the week, which will bring even more damage and heartache for people in our area.

On a happier note, our cool nights have made sleeping so much more enjoyable :) Fall is right at our doorstep. I’ve never really been a Halloween person, so I never do much Fall decorating.....However, I’m crazy about Christmas. By October, I am full swing into preparing for the holiday...crazy, right ???
My holiday open house was such a success last year, I’m thinking of having another one. This year I’d like to have a cyber Christmas Open House......(thinking November sometime......hmm......). I've been busy sewing, punching and creating.....as much as I can.

What do you think of these chairs? I'm in need of new dining room chairs....and instead of buying Windsor chairs (which I do think are beautiful, but are also in every period home I see....and I'd like something a bit different)....I was considering these. (Just the chairs, not the table). I liked the clean, simple lines of these chairs, which in a way, do remind me a little of Windsors. LOL...

The next two aren't antiques, but I couldn't walk away from them....they just had to come home with me.

This morning I was fortunate enough to have a few stolen moments to myself as I sat on my front porch drinking my coffee. It was a perfect summer morning...not too hot, not too cool. Here's a couple of updated house pictures:
Other than the concrete foundation...the entire house was built by my husband. It took us 1 1/2 yrs to finish....well, its never really finished..but you know what I mean. And yes, the garage is practically the same size as the house....cause you know how a man is about his garage.
Anyways, I walked around my house and realized how blessed I am to have such a talented husband. This house is filled with treasures he has made....43 and counting. Everything from cupboards, to shelves, chairs, tables, etc. If it isn't from a local antique shop, then its made by him. He's been a wonderful provider, daddy and friend. I love him very much.

PS. the temporary white door attached to the front columms on the front porch across the stairs was my husband's idea. It keeps our 3 yr old on the front porch where I can see her....allowing her to play in the shade.

Finally finished the new curtain valances for my dining room. They're made out of tobacco colored linen. Next, I hung the lantern I got from Circa Home Living.

I spent the 4th of July visiting family in Rochester, NY...I was lucky enough to go to a few antique shops. I found some wonderful treasures, including some old leather bound books and this lovely frame. I can't wait to stitch something for this frame.

I love May. The trees and flowers are alive. Springtime is finally upon us. My magnolia tree is in full bloom....the delicate blossoms are breathtaking. It's the season of youth! ~New Projects and Ideas~

The slipcover is finished, so we moved the loveseat into the living room.

Now, I have to work on getting a cabinet made to hide the TV!!

So, my next project is going to be my foyer, which opens into the living room. Here are some current pictures of my foyer area:

I'd like to build up the half-wall which separates the living room from the foyer and make it a full wall. Does that make sense? I'd like the living room to feel more like a separate room, instead of opening into the foyer.

I'd like to do something along the lines of this, in the foyer:

I love the painted look of this foyer. I see way too much white in my foyer. What do you think ?? The hardest part will be convincing my husband that the walls will look better painted. Good Morning !! It's a wonderful cold morning here...we got about 6 more inches of snow yesterday. I've had enough of this, when will this ever end!!

I want to thank you all for your nice comments about my shelf. All I can say is, TRY Caromal Colour Paints!!!..you won't be disappointed.

I was home yesterday so I was able to finish a bit more on the Adam & Eve Sampler...

When I'm not stitching I'm back painting again. I've started the stovetop cover I got for Christmas....BLACK is the choice of color this time.

In between painting and stenciling, I've been stitching this Adam and Eve Sampler by Goode Huswife. I'm using 30 ct linen by RR Reproductions, Antique Cotton....30 ct. linen is wonderful on the eyes. I'm loving the colors in this sampler, so I can't wait to see it complete.

I'm also making progress on the shelf.

I can't say enough good things about Caromal Colours paint.....this paint is remarkable. I used "paprika" ..and its such a true primitive red color..my picture doesn't do it justice. I've actually been toying around with the idea of using Caromal Colours on my kitchen cabinets....hmmm.....It's expensive paint, but worth every penny.

Lost the battle...

with my husband and I finally broke down and bought a flat screen TV for him. Now we just have to build something to HIDE IT !!! For now it's sitting on the piece I picked up in Cape Cod last summer.

I'm thinking a corner cabinet/cupboard that is built into the wall. What do you think?
I've started to add a bit more stenciling to the room...here's a close-up pic.

I can't wait for the room to be finished....the project is moving much slower than I anticipated!!

Here is a picture of the pencil post bed my husband made for our daughter. I told Abiageal I wanted to take some pictures of her nice bed so she threw two stuffed animals and a small wreath on the bed for a more "primitive" picture. LOL..

And yes, that's Tinker Bell on the wall....you can't always have the perfect "primitive" room when you're 2 yrs old!!!

Crazy paint.......

Couldn't sleep, so I'm up at 4:30 am...... Here are some pictures of the "pearwood" paint in the living room. These aren't the best pictures, but right now its the best I can do. My daughter has soooo many toys right now on the floor in the living room I can barely walk around the room. Notice how in each picture the paint looks a different color.
Last night after everyone was asleep, I sat quietly in the room and came up with some additional decorating ideas for this room. First, finish stenciling. Second, re-arrange the furniture and thirdly, add additional lighting. Rearranging the furniture is going to be the most challenging....right now we have a large security gate around the pellet stove which is located in the corner of the room. Although it takes up a lot of space.....there is no way the gate is coming down...the safety of my curious 2 yr old is too important.

PS. I know the curtains look terrible in this room....they are a "work-in-progress"....(and the only thing I have right now). :)

Living Room.....done!

Remember when I mentioned last year I wanted to paint the living room and put up chair rail....well it's done !!! Hubby custom-made the chair rail and I got everything painted. The trim color in the living room is "pearwood" by Old Village Paints...so the chair rail and the wall below got a couple coats of the pearwood.

The annoying thing about this paint color is that it looks different in the morning light, afternoon and evening. Not sure if I can deal with that....so I am taking some time to let it settle in before I make a decision on whether to re-paint.

As soon as I can get the camera to work properly....I'll be taking pictures for opinions.

~Christmas Open House~

In a few weeks I'll be having a Holiday Open House. I'm expecting over 100 people. Crazy, right? For some reason back in July it didn't seem crazy to me. I really thought I could handle this, now I'm not so sure.

My house is on the large size, so I started decorating weeks ago. Every few days, I find myself starting to panic thinking about all the work I still have to do. Decorating with a two year old running behind you has been a challenge to say the least. Overall though, she has been pretty good, especially if she "thinks" she is helping. I've pulled out every primitive Christmas decorating book and magazine I own to inspire me with ideas. Of course, owning 25 different decorating books has just lead to more confusion.

Abiageal's bedroom will be the last room I decorate. I rather her room was not completely disassembled before the open house. I'll take pictures of the pencil post bed my husband made for her. It's simply wonderful!! It's funny to see this tiny little 2 yr old sleeping in a queen size bed, but she loves it.

Of course, once the decorating is done, I have to start cooking for the party. Does anyone have suggestions for hors d'oeuvres? Any recipes you'd like to share? I will be ordering some food, but a majority of it, I'd like to make myself. Did I mention that before I can really start any of this.....I am having 23 for Thanksgiving dinner. Yeah, I'm officially insane.

~Early Spice Ball Recipe~

Okay, by popular demand....here is the recipe for the spice/clove balls:

1 cup cinnamon
1/3 cup ground cloves
1/3 cup allspice
1/3 ground nutmeg
1 cup of water
1/2 cup of white glue

Mix all the dry ingredients together. Slowly add the water and the white glue. The mixture will be similar to cookie dough. Add more cinnamon if too sticky or more water if too dry.

Once completely mixed, cover tightly and refrigerate. I let mine sit in the frig all afternoon....in fact, I really didn't get to roll most of the balls until the next morning.

I made mine about the size of golf balls....the size is up to you. I inserted some waxed linen thread to be my hanger. Finally, just insert whole cloves into the balls. I didn't place the cloves too close together...cause as they dry the balls will shrink a bit. Let them air dry....you will need to rotate them every once and while so they don't get flat on one side.

I noticed that mine were really rock solid hard by the time I went to bed.

Halloween is barely over and I've been busy making christmas ornaments.
Just finished these clove/spice balls.....and I LOVE them !!
They were super easy and fun to make...(my 2 yr old even helped me).
I'm making very simple, primitive ornaments this year.

These will hang on one of my small twiggy trees.
Back to playing with some burlap......creating garland for my trees....

So, this past week I was called up for the dreaded "JURY DUTY." I sat in our local courthouse and listened to two attorneys go on and on until I was on the edge of complete insanity. To keep myself busy, I brought with me my "Primitive Place" magazaine {Holiday Issue}. I spent most of my mornings drooling over each picture. During one of our scheduled morning breaks, a woman approached me wanting to know where I purchased my magazine. I gladly let her peak at the magazine. I later learned she was an avid rug hooker and belonged to a local rug hooking group. She invited me to join the group even though I have no experience in rug hooking....she then offered to teach me rug hooking!!! She was such a sweet lady. We exchanged phone numbers, etc...and I am so looking forward to meeting the group and learning to hook. I'll have to say this was the first time I've ever enjoyed jury duty...(too bad I won't be called up for another 6 years).....LOL..

The larger boxes are not finished...the paint is still drying on the tops.

I think the Walnut Tree sampler will be a hanging sampler. I love the simplicity of it.

To paint, or not to paint ?

So, recently I've been entertaining the idea of painting my kitchen cabinets. Not that my cabinets need painting...they're practically brand new (5 yrs old). They are made of maple with a chestnut stain....and actually I really liked them 5 yrs ago. However, after about a million hours of surfing the net and blogs, plus reading endless primitive magazines and books, to achieve that colonial/primitive look I want, I probably need to paint the cabinets.

Here is my kitchen:

The trim and bead board is painted with Old Village paint, Rittenhouse Ivory. I love the color, its no where near a true ivory color, more like a beige/tan. And as you can see, I don't have many upper cabinets.

Here are some sample paint cards I've picked up recently.

I like the top right card colors. However, do I paint all the cabinets one color, or should I paint the island a different color? Or would you not paint them at all?

Hi ! I just got back from vacationing at the Cape. My husband, myself and Abby (my 2 yr.old) went to Hyannis, Cape Cod for six days. We had a wonderful time. My little one experienced the ocean for the first time and amazingly the water was as warm as bath water ! I didn't want to leave.

While traveling through Harwich, I stopped at this wonderful country store and found this amazing red cupboard. I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it. The patina is simply wonderful. The store owner told me she bought the piece at an antique show in Chatham, Cape Cod. For now, I have the cupboard in the living room, but I think I'll be moving it to the kitchen soon.

I feel guilty admitting this, but not once during my vacation did I pick up any of my cross stitch or needle punch. My plan was to get all this stitching done while enjoying the ocean breezes, but it never happened! LOL...oh well:)
Anyways, here is what I've been working on this month....this needle punch is an old pattern I had laying around by Wylie Primitive Designs. I'm thinking of making it into a pocket ?!??!? (or maybe not....:))

{Getting Ready for the Fair}

Four years ago, I was honored to be asked to participate in the Heritage Craft Fair, Exhibit and Sale of Traditional American Crafts at a local museum/working farm in Coxsackie, NY. If you ever get the chance to visit Upstate New York, you should definitely stop by to see this annual show in October. As a bit of history: the buildings located on the farm are what are known as the Bronck Museum. This is the oldest farm in the Hudson Valley, having been first settled in 1663. The thirteen sided barn is a must-see when you visit the grounds. Here is the website for those you who would like to learn more: http://www.gchistory.org/

While walking around the grounds and taking in the wonderful history, you can meet the cutest sheep and the many demonstrators of wool, knitting, weaving, etc. Plus, there is great food and wonderful live music !! Each year, there are a handful of crafters asked to participate, who sell a variety of primitive hand-made goods.

For the past two years, I haven't participated because of the need to devote my time and energy into my infant daughter. This year, I am excited to say, I will be returning to the Fair!! I've been unbelievably busy getting ready for this. This year, I will be adding some samplers and needle punch items to my early american floorcloth booth. {I own my own business: designing/painting early american floorcloths}.

I love the opportunity to meet new artisans. There are sooo many creative people out there, it can be an overwhelming experience, but something I never want to miss out on. There is nothing like a Fall October day when the air is crisp, and you get to surround yourself with such talent. My favorite are the marvelous weavers. I love to browse and admire the handiwork of these craftswomen.

So, please if you find yourself in Upstate New York, perhaps to check out the wonderful Fall colors of the Adirondacks, then come on over and experience this wondeful festival.

{Bathroom Makeover}

I've been working on my guest bathroom for about 2 weeks now. Not sure if it actually qualifies as a "makeover" considering the house is only 5 yrs old....so it isn't like I am installing new fixtures, tile or re-painting. However, I am stenciling a border on the walls, making a new curtain, purchasing a new rug, and making a curtain for the pedestal sink and hopefully, going to convince my hubby to make a frame for the mirror over the sink. I've saved up some money and I'm ordering new tin lights to replace the two lights on each side of the mirror over the sink.

I can't seem to get the bathroom pictures downloaded to my blog tonight...not sure what is going on. I wanted to share some "before" shots.

Instead, I'll share an old picture of my house....this picture was taken about 2 years ago...notice there is no hand rail on the front porch and very little landscaping. We now have handrail and landscaping....I'll share updated pictures of the house later with you......its amazing how much changes in a few years.

Sadly, I've come to realize that I just don't have the time to stitch or punch half the patterns I own. And honestly, I must admit that my taste in patterns has changed over the past couple of years. So, rather than list the patterns on E-bay or Etsy, I thought I would offer them first to anyone in Blog~Land.

I've included some pictures so you can get an idea of what I will be offering (and this is only a few of the patterns I will have listed). My prices will be affordable and will include shipping.

I will put everything up for sale on Thursday, May 20th at approximately 7:00 p.m.
It will be on a first-come, first-serve basis, so I will be responding to the e-mails in the order I receive them. I prefer payment by Paypal, but will also accept checks.

{Pewter and Pigtails}

Pewter:
I won these tiny pewter plates on ebay this week. I bought only 4 plates..but the seller was kind enough to send me 8 plates. How lucky is that!!!! They have got a wonderful patina to them.

I also won this pewter candlestick...which I just love.

Pigtails:
Getting my almost 2 yr old to keep pigtails in her hair is nearly impossible. But I was able to snap a few pics before she decided she had enough.
